Ord is a city in Valley County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,269 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Valley County[3]. Ord was named in honor of Civil War general Edward O. C. Ord.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,269 people, 1,006 households, and 611 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,366.3 people per square mile (527.8/km²). There were 1,149 housing units at an average density of 691.9 per square mile (267.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.71% White, 0.22% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.25% of the population.

There were 1,006 households out of which 26.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 36.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 27.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 82.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,364, and the median income for a family was $36,383. Males had a median income of $26,412 versus $16,895 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,337. About 6.8% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 12.2% of those age 65 or over.
